History
How the band has evolved over the years

Next: Past Members of Outback >>

2005 Brett and Chin Hwi now perform as a duo with Frances stepping in whenever required.

2004 Chin-Hwi originally stepped in to help out while Jane was away. Now that Jane's en route to wedded bliss, Chin-Hwi is the gal on the fiddle!

2004 Frances joins the band when required for a trio, and fills out the sound on the largerphone (aka the stick with bottle tops on it).

Summer 2003 Zoe joins the duo for a few months as fiddle player while Jane visits the sheep farm for Christmas.
2003 - 2004 Jane joins Brett for the next phase in the life of Outback, after the amicable dissolution of the combination of Brett, Greg, Dave and Matt in June of 2003, this having been the longest standing lineup in the band's 15 year history.

August 2003 The band performs its final show at Swansea RSL. Both band members and devout fans are thinking 'where to now?'. The band produces an action-packed live CD in Brett's lounge room.

2001 Matt Kaiser rejoins the band and remains until June 2003 when he leaves to pursue work with a duo.
2000 The band once again travels to Tamworth, this time winning the Carlton and United Fosters Battle of the Bush in which it had come runner-up in 1999
1998 or 99 Catherine Britt performs several songs with the band at the "Good Companions" in Tamworth during the Country Music Festival. Britt is the friend and protégé of Kasey Chambers.
1998 Matt leaves the band in Easter and moves to Cairns. The band continues to work 3-piece, winning the Fosters Battle of the Bush Bands

1996 Damian leaves the band which evolves a new sound this time incorporating Matt Kaiser, who they had run into a few years earlier at the Bluegrass Championships at Tamworth. Matt was versatile playing banjo, acoustic and electric guitar. Dave Forster was discovered while busking in Hunter St Newcastle. Dave was quick to learn a new 'bushgrass' style. The band in this format goes on to win "The National Battle of the Bushbands"in 1998.

Mid 90s Local artist Kent Daniels joined the band for several gigs

1994 Faced with the prospect of working 2-piece after losing Luke Neale and Greg Gunther, the band recruits Damian Rounce to sing and play keyboard while Brett moves on to guitar. The trio is seen here at the Bay Bush Barn.

1992 In front of a crowd of thousands OUTBACK wins its first 'Battle of the Bush Bands' in Tamworth after being runners-up the year before. The band goes on to win its category in the Star Professional Music Awards in the same year.

1991 This year saw the band operating at near full strength. With new fiddler Luke hitting his straps you could hear the sound starting to develop from its infancy in the previous two years. Luke is awarded runner up in the fiddle section of the Tamworth Bluegrass championships and stays with the band until 1994. The band records its album "Live at the Drama Room". This album is recorded live in the drama room (not surprisingly) at Belmont High School.

1990 Glen leaves the band to pursue his computing career but puts us onto Luke Neale as a potential replacement.

1989 After finding Brett via word of mouth and Greg Gunther via and advertisement, Greg Carruthers and Glen Hart consolidate OUTBACK from the ashes of EUREKA, its predecessor.
1986 Greg Carruthers joined the Newcastle based band Eureka with whom he learnt to call bush dances while playing at Thunderbolt's Retreat and the Bay Bush Barn. Greg is seen here with Maria who worked with OUTBACK for a while in late 1992, Rob's brother, Sally-Anne and Rob Baxter.
